West Point, NY - Sophomore Luke Filicek had a goal and an assist and senior Brad Roberts made 28 saves in goal as the Army Black Knights held on for a 2-1 win over the Pioneers in men's ice hockey action Sunday afternoon at Tate Rink in West Point, NY. The loss snapped the Pioneers three game winning streak.
After a scoreless first period, the Black Knights jumped on top 2:18 into the second when freshman Zach McKelvie scored his goal of the year. With the Knights on the power play, McKelvie took the puck in the offensive zone, spun to avoid the defenders and flipped a shot past Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) to put Army up 1-0.
The Knights would open up a 2-0 with 2:41 left in the second. Sophomore Bryce Hollweg fired a shot from the blue line and classmate Luke Flicek was in front for a tip-in goal. It was his fourth goal of the season and turned out to be the game winner.
The Pioneers finally got on the board at the 9:39 mark of the third period. With Sacred Heart on the power play, Roberts made a save on senior Andrew Billinghurst's (Fort Collins, CO) initial shot but sophomore Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) was in front to put home the rebound to cut the Pioneer deficit in half.
Army outshot Sacred Heart 32-29 for the game. Roberts was once again the difference for the Knights as he turned in another solid performance, just as he did against the Pioneers Tuesday night in Milford.
The Pioneers (8-4-1, 6-3-1 AH), who are playing six games in the span of 13 days, are back in action Thursday night when they open up a home-and-home set with Connecticut in Milford. Face off at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
