Sacred Heart and Air Force Skate to Second Straight Draw, 1-1

Colorado Springs, CO - Each team scored a first period goal as Sacred Heart and Air Force skated to a 1-1 tie in men's ice hockey action Saturday night at the Cadet Ice Arena. The draw was the second straight for the two teams, after battling to a 3-3 tie on Friday night.
Both teams had opportunities in the third period but the goaltenders for each team were impressive in the final stanza and overtime. Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) finished with 35 saves for Sacred Heart while Peter Foster stopped 25 shots for the Falcons.
Freshman Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) put the Pioneers on the board first with his third goal of the year with 4:25 left in the first period. Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) picked up a loose puck on the left wing boards in the offensive zone and fed senior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) a pass near the goalpost. Ferraro snapped a shot on net that was stopped by Foster. However, Gordon followed the play a put the rebound into the top of the net to give the Pioneers the lead.
The Falcons tied the game with 1:53 left in the opening period on a power play goal by Josh Schaffer. After Brent Olson won an offensive zone face-off the puck slid to Schaffer who fired a shot from the left face-off circle that went through the pads of Smith.
A scoreless second period saw the Pioneers miss an opportunity to take the lead when the failed to convert on a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the period.
Air Force out-shot Sacred Heart 36-26 for the game. The Pioneers were scoreless in three chances with the man advantage while the Falcons were 1-for-6.
Sacred Heart has now played four games against the United States Service Academies, two against Army and two against Air Force, and all four games have ended in ties.
The Pioneers are off until Thursday, December 21st when they open a two game series with Bentley at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The teams will also play Friday December 22nd. Face-off both nights is 7:00 pm.
