Army Tops SHU, 4-2
Nov. 30, 2007
West Point, NY - Four different Army players netted goals as the Black Knights scored three unanswered goals two post a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at Tate Rink.
The Pioneers jumped on top first on a goal by junior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) at the 3:25 mark of the first period. Tyll took a pass from sophomore Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA), moved into the Army zone and snapped a shot from the right face-off circle that went over the right shoulder of Black Knights goaltender Josh Kassel and under the crossbar. Junior Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) also had an assist on Tyll's second goal of the year.
Freshman Joey Ammon tied the game for the Black Knights less then two minutes later, at the 5:14 mark of the first. With the Pioneers changing, a turnover near the SHU blueline allowed Eric Sefchick to find Ammon with a pass. Ammon then fired a shot inside the left post that beat Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) to tie the game.
Sophomore Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) gave Sacred Heart the lead again 2:11 into the second period. With traffic in front of the Army goal, Boisvert was able to corral a loose puck and lift it over a sprawled out Kassel and into the top of the net. Junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) had an assist on Boisvert's first goal of the year.
Army tied the game again with 9:19 left in the middle period when Sefchilk fed a perfect pass through the goalmouth to Robb Ross. Just 1:22 later the Black Knights took the lead when Bryce Hollweg hit Owen Meyer with a centering pass from the corner. Hollweg redirected the puck into the net for the power play tally.
The Black Knights opened up a two goal lead early in the third period when Cody Omilusik put home a rebound after Drew stopped an initial shot by Jeff Fearing. The Pioneers had some chances to get closer but were denied by Kassel who finished the game with 27 saves. Drew stopped 30 shots in the loss for SHU.
The Pioneers and Black Knights close out their series Saturday night in Milford. Face-off at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:05 pm. Coverage of the game can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
