Milford, CT - Sophomore Mark Znutas scored the game winning goal and Holy Cross netted three unanswered third period goals to post a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion. It's the first time Holy Cross has won in Milford since January of 2005.
After a scoreless first period, Jay Silvia opened the scoring 57 seconds into the second stanza. The freshman picked up a loose puck after a turnover behind the Pioneer net, wrapped around the goal and slammed the puck between the pads of SHU goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) to give Holy Cross the early lead.
The Pioneers grabbed the lead with two goals in a 2:30 window midway through the second period. Senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) got things started with his fifth tally of the year at the 11:38 mark. Senior Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) found Giosa with a perfect centering pass in the slot and Giosa snapped a shot past Crusader goaltender Adam Roy to put the Pioneers on the board. Junior Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) put SHU ahead with 6:08 left in the second when he converted a feed from Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) for a powerplay tally.
Sophomore Jordan Cyr tied the game for Holy cross 3:01 into the third period when he put home a pass from Brodie Sheahan on a transitition rush. Znutas scored the game winner midway through the third, stepping into a slap shot at the top of the offensive zone. Peter Lorinser iced the game with his first goal of the year with seven minutes remaining.
Holy Cross controlled much of the offensive play, out shooting Sacred Heart 31-22 for the game, including 10-5 in the final period. Roy made 20 saves to earn the victory for the Crusaders while Drew made 27 saves in a losing effort.
Sacred Heart and Holy Cross close out their series Sunday in Worcester. Face-off is set for 4:05 pm.
