Pioneers Score Three in Third, Turn Back Knights
Nov. 29, 2005
Milford, CT - Sacred Heart scored three third period goals and held off a gutty Army squad for a 4-2 win in men's ice hockey Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Army got on the board first when sophomore Chase Podsiad poked a rebound past Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) 2:56 into the game. After Smith made the save on Zach McKelvie's shot, Podsiad found the loose puck for his sixth goal of the season.
Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) tied the game at the 8:47 mark of the first. Black Knights goaltender Brad Roberts made a save on Bear Trapp's (Regina, SK) first shot but the hard rebound bounced right to O'Brien who flipped it into the net for his team leading eighth goal of the year.
After a scoreless second period, the teams appeared to turn up the offensive pressure in the third. Junior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) put the Pioneers on top for good when he scored on a wraparound shot three minutes into the final period. After Ferraro took a pass from senior Erik Roos (Milford, CT), he did a circle around the goal and shoved the puck into the left corner of the net, just past the outstretched skate of Roberts for his third goal of the season.
Trapp put the Pioneers up by two goals 1:44 later with his sixth goal of the season. After taking the puck behind the net, he brought it out and flipped a shot past the stick of Roberts. O'Brien and sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbrand, QC) got the assists. It was Parent's team leading 13th assist.
Army's Seth Beamer got the Black Knights back within one with 13:50 left in the game. Beamer blasted a shot from the blue line that found its way under the arm of Smith for his team leading fifth goal of the season.
Junior Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) put the Pioneers back up by two halfway through the final stanza. After taking a pass from sophomore Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB), Sanders flipped a shot from the top of the left face off circle that found the back of the net. For Sanders, it was his first goal of the year.
The Pioneers outshot the Knights 43-18 for the game, but Roberts kept Army close by making 39 saves. Smith had 16 saves for the Pioneers to notch his sixth win of the year.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday night when they visit RPI in non-conference action. Face-off in Troy, NY is set for 7:00 pm.
