Milford, CT - Senior defenseman Bernie Chmiel (Piitsburgh, PA) scored one goal and added three assists, and the Pioneers top power play unit clicked for five goals as Sacred Heart outlasted RIT 8-5 in men's ice hockey action Sunday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) got the Pioneers started with a power play goal 5:38 into the first period. After Chmiel blasted a shot from the blue line, O'Brien was in front to deflect the puck into the net for his team leading sixth goal of the season.
Freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) put the Pioneers up 2-0 with his fifth goal of the season with 12 minutes left in the opening frame. After Tigers goaltender Jocelyn Guimond stopped an initial shot by Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI), Trapp was there for the rebound to tally his fifth goal of the season.
RIT would get on the board halfway through the first period when Rob Tarrantino flipped a shot past Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) who was making his first career start. The first period would end with SHU leading 2-1.
The second period saw the teams combine for five goals and nine penalties. The Pioneers would convert on two of their five power plays in the period. Molinaro put the Pioneers up 3-1 when he converted on a pass from Chmiel. The top power play unit would strike again halfway through the second when sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) blasted a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net.
The Tigers cut the Pioneer lead to 4-2 with 5:43 left in the second period when Matt Smith took a pass from Tarrantino and put it past Drew.
The Pioneers took a 5-2 lead with 1:59 left in the second when senior Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) put home a rebound shot after Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, QC) was stopped on the initial rush. However, the Tigers answered the goal just nine seconds later when Darrell Draper took a pass from Simon Lambert and went the length of the ice to put a shot past Drew.
The Tigers opened the third period scoring when Steve Pinizzotto poked home a rebound shot to cut the Sacred Heart lead to 5-4. But then the Pioneers power play went back to work as Chmiel scored the fourth Sacred Heart power play of the day on a blast from the blue line. It was Chmiel's third goal of the season and capped off a four point game for the senior.
Darren Doherty fired a shot under the arm of Drew with 11:13 left in the game to draw the Tigers back within one. However the Sacred Heart power play would strike one last time as Parent scored his second goal of the game with 10:06 left to put the Pioneers ahead for good.
O'Brien added an empty net goal with 35 seconds remaining to raise his team leading total to seven. Parent had one of his two assists on the day to raise his team leading total to 12. The Pioneers finished 5-9 on the power play. Drew made 25 saves in net to notch his first career win.
The Pioneers (6-3-1, 5-2-1, AH) return to Atlantic Hockey action Tuesday night when they host Army. Face-off at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
