Erie, PA - Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) and junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) each scored goals as Sacred Heart and Mercyhurst skated to a 2-2 tie in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Sacred Heart is now unbeaten in eight straight meetings with Mercyhurst.
Trapp got the Pioneers on the board first with a tally at the 12:16 mark of the first period. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) and junior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) tallied assists on Trapp's four the goal of the year. The goal was Trapp's fourth tally in his last five games, while Johnson has now tallied a point in seven straight games.
The Lakers tied the game with just 20 seconds left in the first period when Brett Robinson beat Stefan Drew (Oakbank. MB) with a shot for his second goal of the year.
After a scoreless second period, Kirk Menderdanch put the Lakers on top 3:39 into the third period. However, Parent tallied the tying goal on a feed from Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) at the 7:27 mark with Sacred Heart in an extra attacker, delayed penalty situation.
Mercyhurst had the best scoring opportunity in overtime when Menderanch had a shot from the doorstep stonewalled by Drew with 13.5 seconds left.
SHU out-shot the Lakers 32-30 for the game. Neither team could capitalize on the power play as the Pioneers were 0-6 while Mercyhurst went 0-8.
The Pioneers face Army in a home-and-home series next weekend. The teams open the set Friday night at Tate Rink. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
