Final Stats

MILFORD, CT (November 23) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers used a goal and an assist from freshman Zach Dehm (Trumbull, CT) to take down rival and Atlantic Hockey foe Quinnipiac in conference play Tuesday night.

The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 5:23 mark, as Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) finished off a Bernie Chmiel rebound to put the SHU on top early. The Bobcats would equalize later on in the first when Tom Watkins sent a screeching slap shot past Pioneer net minder Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC). Sacred Heart would answer back just 1:32 later. Ryan Bremner (Williams Lake, BC) sent a slap shot onto Quinnipiac goalkeeper Josh Siembida, the rebound came to Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO), who sent it over to Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC) who fired the puck into the net for a 2-1 lead that the Pioneers would take into the first intermission.

Only one goal was scored in the second period, the eventual game-winner, off the stick of Dehm. Dehm took an outlet pass from Erik Roos (Milford, CT) skated down the left wing and sent a wrist shot to the far side of Siembida for the 3-1 lead.

The Pioneers would run the score to 4-1 when Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) dropped a pass for Peter Giatrelis (Wallingford, CT). Giatrelis took a low shot from the high slot area, and was able to sneak the puck through the five hole.

The Bobcats would re-claim a goal 7:11 into the final frame, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 situation. Matt Froehlich found himself on the doorstep with a loose puck, and quickly sent it top shelf to cut the Pioneer lead to 4-2. Quinnipiac, unable to muster another strong scoring chance ended the game giving up a short-handed empty net goal to Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) with 31 seconds remaining.

The win propels the Pioneers to a 5-6-0 (5-1-0 Atlantic Hockey) record, and drops Quinnipiac to 4-5-1 (1-1-1 Atlantic Hockey).

The Pioneers return to action on Friday November 26 when they participate in the RPI Holliday Hockey Tournament facing off with Air Force in the opening round. Game time is 4:00 PM.
