Erie, PA - Junior Eric Giosa (Detriot, MI) scored the game winning goal 3:01 into overtime and junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) added a goal and an assist as Sacred Heart rallied for 3-2 victory over Mercyhurst Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The win snapped a three game losing streak for Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart's lone shot on goal in the extra period proved to be the game winner. Giosa's shot from the blue line acted more like a pinball, but it got the job done for the Pioneers as it beat junior Matt Lundin.
Freshman Brandon Coccimiglio started things off for the Lakers with a power-play goal at 12:22 of the first period with a goal that was assisted by sophomores Matt Fennell and Cullen Eddy.
The Pioneers tied the game with just 35 seconds left in the opening stanza as Trapp scored on the power play. Sophomores Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) and Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) assisted on Trapp's third tally of the year.
The Lakers grabbed their second lead of the contest when freshman Steve Cameron scored his second goal of his collegiate career on a breakaway with 3:47 left in the second period.
SHU's Adam DeJong (Kitchener, ON) scored the only goal of the third period, just three minutes into the stanza and two seconds after a Mercyhurst penalty had expired. Giosa had the primary assist.
Sacred Heart outshot Mercyhurst, 39-33. Lundin made 36 saves in the loss, including several point-blank shots, while SHU's Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) stopped 31 shots. Both teams struggled with the man advantage as Mercyhurst finished 1-for-8 and Sacred Heart was 1-for-5.
The Pioneers and Lakers close out their series Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
