MILFORD, CT (November 21, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team defeated Bentley 3-2 in a hard fought game at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Sophomore Peter Giatrelis (Wallingford, CT) scored the game-winning goal for the Pioneers at 9:02 of the third period.
The Pioneers took the lead midway through the first period when freshman Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Giatrelis and junior Patrick Sullivan (Mullica Hull, NJ) assisted on the goal.
Their lead was quickly extended to 2-0 when junior Barclay Folk (Westbank, BC) scored his first goal of the season, with assists from junior Ryan Bremner (Williams Lake, BC) and freshman Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC).
Bentley cut the lead in half in the second period when Paul Markarian (Quincy, MA) scored for the Falcons at 5:38 of the second period with assists from junior Seth Vinocur (Traverse City, MI) and senior Joe Lovell (Falmouth, MA). Sacred Heart regained a two-goal advantage at 9:02 of the third period.
Bentley cut the lead back to one goal just 2:35 later when junior Troy Wiebler (Faribault, MI) scored from Vinocur and freshman Kyle Larman (Canton, MI). That was as close as the Falcons could get as the Pioneers held on for the 3-2 win.
Junior goaltender Kevin LaPointe (Quebec, QC) made 32 saves in recording his third win of the season and bade a number of big saves in the game to preserve the Pioneers lead throughout the game. Junior Simon St. Pierre (Montreal, QC) made 22 saves in taking the loss and also made some big saves that kept Bentley in the game.
The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow night when they open a home and home series at Holy Cross at 7:00 pm in Worcester, MA. They will play the second half of the series on November 25 at 7:00 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
