Nov. 15, 2008
Milford, CT - Sophomore Olivier St. Onge (Wickham, QC) made 19 saves to earn his first collegiate victory and Sacred Heart scored three goals in a five minute window in the second period en route to a 4-0 win over American International in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The Pioneers scored four goals in the first 25 minutes of the game to provide all the offense. SHU got started early, as senior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the game. As the Pioneers set up off their first rush of the game, freshman Ryan Miniaci (Monroe, CT) sent a shot in from the net. The puck went off the post but caromed to a charging Giosa who slapped home the rebound for the quick score.
Sacred Heart came out flying in the second period and was quickly rewarded with another first minute goal. With the Pioneers on the power-play senior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) fired a shot on goal which AIC goaltender Dan Ramierez blocked away. However, the rebound landed on the stick of freshman Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) who was following the play and the rookied whacked home the puck for his second goal in as many games. Gingera has now recorded at least one point in six straight games.
Two big slapshots provided the final two goals for the Pioneers. Sophomore Chris Brown (Sherills Ford, NC) blasted a shot from the point at the 3:27 mark that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead. Just over one minute later, junior Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) ripped a shot of his own which beat Ramierez to make it 4-0 and complete the scoring for the evening.
The Yellow Jacket's best scoring chances came in the first period when they out shot Sacred Heart 9-4. AIC had just 10 shots in the final two frames as SHU finished with a 32-19 shots advantage. The Pioneers were 1-for-4 on the power play while AIC failed to score in seven chances with the extra skater.
