Milford, CT - Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) had a goal and two assists and goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) made 34 saves as Sacred Heart held off Holy Cross, 4-2, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
In a game that was marked by a virtual parade to the penalty box, the Crusaders finished with two goals in 11 attempts on the power play while the Pioneers were 1-8 with the man advantage.
Holy Cross jumped on top with 3:30 left in the first period when Rob Fourshner scored on a rebound. Smith stopped an initial shot by Ryan Driscoll but Fourshner was trailing the play and pounded the rebound past Smith for his first goal of the year.
In a second period where the Crusaders went 0-5 on the power play, the Pioneers tied the game while shorthanded at the 2:50 mark. Junior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) carried the puck in and fired s shot that was stopped by Crusader goaltender Ian Dams. However, the rebound came to O'Brien who snapped the puck into the top corner for his team leading eighth goal of the year.
Freshman Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) gave the Pioneers the lead at the 3:35 mark and the teams skating four aside. Freshman Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) won an offensive zone face-off, pushing the puck towards the goal. Jarman swooped in and slammed the loose puck into the net for the third goal of his rookie season.
A neat centering pass from Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) to Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) allowed the Pioneers to open up a two goal lead with 4:43 left in the middle period. Trapp found a loose puck along the left wing offensive zone boards and fired a centering pass into the middle that Giosa redirected into the net.
Holy Cross made an aggressive move and pulled goaltender Tyler Chestnut while they were on the power play with 4:25 left. With a two man advantage now in place, Brodie Sherman was able to drive a loose puck through a mass of people in front of the net with 3:58 left in the game to make the score 3-2.
The Crusaders again pulled Chestnut from the net with 45 seconds left. However, this time it was the Pioneers who capitalized. With 34 seconds left, O'Brien won a defensive zone face-off back to Parent. Parent sent an outlet pass to Trapp who was falling down as he fired the puck into the empty net to seal the Pioneer victory.
Holy Cross out shot Sacred Heart 36-19 for the game but Smith made several excellent saves to preserve the victory for the Pioneers. Dams made nine saves for the Crusaders through two periods. Chestnut took over in the third and stopped six shots.
The Pioneers and Crusaders will meet again Saturday night in Worcester. Face-off at the Hart Center is set for 7:00 pm.
