Pioneers Top Yellow Jackets, 5-2
Nov. 7, 2006
West Springfield, MA - Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) and sophomore Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) each had a goal and two assists and sophomore Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) made 34 saves in goal as Sacred Heart beat American International, 5-2, in men's ice hockey action Tuesday night at the Olympia Ice Center.
Junior Scott Marchesi (Candle Lake, SK) put the Pioneers on top at the 5:45 mark of the first period. Marchesi took a pass from freshman Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) and raced up the ice. He carried the puck over the Yellow Jacket blueline and snapped a shot over the left shoulder of goaltender Coby Robinson. Senior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) also picked up an assist on Marchesi's second goal of the year.
An action-packed second period saw the Pioneers score three goals to basically put the game away. Senior Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) made it 2-0 SHU at the 2:29 mark. Nick Kary (Boisbriand, QC) picked up a loose puck on the left wing boards and fed a wide open Sanders a perfect centering pass in the slot. Sanders ripped a slap shot past Robinson for his first goal of the year.
The Yellow Jackets made it 2-1 at the 7:05 mark when Mark Pavli scored his first goal of the year. Pavli took a pass from Jereme Tendler, did some fancy stick-handling through the Pioneer zone and slid the puck through Drew's pads.
O'Brien and Trapp hooked up twice in the second half of the middle period to give the Pioneers a three goal lead. First with 8:02 left, O'Brien centered Trapp in the offensive zone. Trapp slammed two shots off the pads of Robinson, but, on the third try, finally was able to get the puck around the Yellow Jackets goaltender for his fourth goal of the season. The duo hooked up again with 1:24 left in the second, this time with O'Brien on the scoring end. Trapp sent O'Brien up ice with a pass and he drove his way towards the net, lifting the puck into the top of the net as he slid into Robinson.
AIC cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 4:57 mark of the third period. Greg Genovese fed Keith Rodger a perfect centering pass from behind the net and Rodger fired a shot into an open corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Pioneers top line would strike once more with 55 seconds remaining in the game to finish the scoring. Trapp carried the puck over the blue line and dropped a pass back to O'Brien. O'Brien fed a cutting Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) a pass to the net and Boisvert put the puck behind Robinson for his second goal of the year.
The Yellow Jackets out shot the Pioneers 36-32 for the game but Drew was solid in goal to earn his second victory of the season.
The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they face AHA rival Holy Cross in a home-and-home series. The teams will meet Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion and then travel north for a rematch at the Hart Center Saturday night. Game time both nights is 7:00 pm. Saturday night's game can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
