Watertown, MA - Senior Brendan McCartin scored 50 seconds into the third period and the Bentley Falcons held on to edge the Pioneers 2-1 in men's ice hockey action Saturday night in Watertown, MA.
McCartin scored off a rebound that Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) couldn't control. Smith made a save on freshman Anthony Canzoneri's initial shot, but the puck bounced out of his glove and McCartin was their to put home the game-winner. Josh Chase also had an assist on McCartin's first goal of the season.
The Pioneers got on the board first, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play half way through the first period, when freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) scored his first goal of the season. Trapp found a rebound after a shot by Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) and put it behind Falcon goaltender Geordan Murphy. Senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) also had an assist on the goal.
The Falcons would answer back on a 5-on-3 power play of their own with 4:32 left in the first. Senior Ryan Lessnau scored his third goal of the season on a tip-in off a pass from Canzoneri. Jaye Judd had the secondary assist on the goal.
The teams played to a scoreless second period that featured end-to-end action. For the game, the Falcons outshot the Pioneers 34-26. Smith made 32 saves for the Pioneers while Murphy stopped 25 shots for Bentley.
