Men's Ice Hockey Tripped Up by Ohio State
Nov. 6, 2004
COLUMBUS, OH (November 6) - Dan Knapp netted a hat trick and Buckeye goaltender Dave Caruso turned away 23 Pioneers shots to send the Pioneers home with a 7-1 loss in non-conference action at the Value City Arena in Columbus, OH Saturday night.
Ohio State picked up on Saturday night, where they left off on Friday night, lighting the lamp on the power play just 9:19 into the contest. Knapp scored his first, deflecting home a Domenic Maiani pass from the left corner to put OSU on top for the only goal of the first period.
The Pioneers were again victims of an early second period goal, as John Dingle capped a beautiful tic-tac-toe Ohio State sequence, firing the puck into the net past Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) for the eventual game winner. Knapp would add another goal in the period to give OSU a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the third and final period.
The Pioneers broke onto the scoreboard at the 7:15 mark in the final stanza, when Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) roofed the puck up and over Caruso. Barclay Folk (Westbank, BC) and Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) picked up assists on the play.
Before the Pioneers could claw any closer, Ohio State buried SHU, converting on a five-on-three powerplay, then the ensuing five-on-four for a commanding 5-1 lead. Ohio State would tack on a couple more goals to finish off Sacred Heart 7-1.
Smith made 29 saves in net for the Pioneers in taking the loss. His record now sits at 1-2-0 on the season, while Caruso's 23 saves improved his record to 6-2.
The Pioneers finish off a six-game road trip next weekend, as they play a couple of dates with Atlantic Hockey foe Canisius in Buffalo, NY.
