Milford, CT - Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) had two goals and three assists and sophomore Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) added a goal and an assist as Sacred Heart beat Mercyhurst, 6-4, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The Pioneers dominated much of the game offensively, out shooting the Lakers 46-23. Sacred Heart's power play, which had struggled early in the season, went 3-9 with the man advantage.
Senior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) got the Pioneers started at the 9:45 mark of the first period. Ferraro picked up a loose puck along the offensive board and made some nifty moves on the stick-handle a slipped the puck past the left side of Lakers goaltender Tyler Small for his third goal of the season.
The Pioneers went up 2-0 on a 5-on-3 power play goal by O'Brien with 5:34 left in the first period. After a flurry in front of the net, the puck slid back to O'Brien who wound up and fired a shot that beat Small for his second tally of the year.
After the Pioneers went down two men at the end of the first period, the Lakers converted on the two man advantage of their own 49 seconds into the second period. Junior Ben Cottreau took a pass from Scott Champagne and snapped a shot that beat Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) over the left shoulder.
The Pioneers struck again on the power play halfway through the middle stanza to reopen a two goal lead. Trapp took a pass from sophomore Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) and fired a shot from the left face-off circle that trickled through Small's pads.
Freshman Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) scored his first career goal with 6:12 left in the second period to make it 4-1 Sacred Heart. Gordon took a pass from O'Brien and fired the puck into an open right corner of the net.
The Lakers cut their deficit to 4-2 after two periods when Nick Vandebled scored with 1:52 left after he forced defenseman Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) to turn the puck over at the Pioneer blueline.
O'Brien scored his second goal of the night 2:07 into the third to make it 5-2. After Trapp's initial shot was stopped by Small, O'Brien came into to pound home the rebound for his third goal of the season.
Mercyhurst struck again with 4:52 left in regulation on a goal by Matt Robinson. Sophomore Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) netted a power play goal with 2:49 left to extend the lead again for the Pioneers. Scott Champagne scored his second goal of the year in the closing seconds to finish the scoring.
