Nov. 2, 2007
Milford, CT - Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Dave Jarman (Tornoto, ON) added two assists to lead Sacred Heart past Connecticut, 4-2, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. SHU remains unbeaten on the year in Atlantic Hockey play, improving to 2-0-1 and 2-2-1 overall.
The Pioneers jumped on top almost right away as junior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) scored just 42 seconds into the game. Senior Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) carried the puck into the zone and fired a shot that went off the shoulder of Husky goaltender Beau Erickson. The rebound fell onto the stick of a trailing Tyll snapped the puck past Erickson for his first goal of the year.
SHU took a two goal lead midway through the opening period when junior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) converted on a feed from Parent. Jarman also had an assist on Giosa's second goal of the year.
The Huskies were able to get back in the game with a goal early in the second period. At the 3:39 mark, sophomore Michael Coppola took a pass from B.J. Bayer and snapped a shot inside the post, past SHU goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) to put UCONN on the board.
SHU regained the two goal lead with 3:12 left in the second when junior Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) scored what proved to be the game winning goal. After a scramble in front of the Husky net, which saw Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) and Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) both take shots that were stopped, Johnson was finally able to clean up the rebound and tally his third goal of the season.
The Pioneers dominated much of the third period, outshooting UConn 20-8 in the final stanza. However, freshman Chris Ochoa kept the Huskies within striking distance when he scored at the 9:18 mark on a bad angle shot from the right circle.
Parent put the game away for Sacred Heart with 5:32 left. Jarman brought the puck into the zone and blasted a shot that rang off the post. The puck came out to a waiting Parent who fired it back over a sprawled out Erickson and into the net.
Sacred Heart outshot UConn 37-27 for the game. Drew made 25 saves in goal to earn the victory while Erickson stopped 33 shots.
The Pioneers and Huskies close out their series Saturday night at the Freitas Ice Forum. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
