Big Red too much for Pioneers
Oct. 31, 2004
ITHACA, NY (October 30) - The Cornell Big Red scored four goals in the third period to bury the Pioneers in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Saturday night.
Cornell got on the board first, scoring a pair of goals during the first period. Matt Moulson and Mike Iggulden doing the honors, as Cornell entered the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
The save of the night came with 4:15 left in the second period when Cornell's Raymond Sawada and Cam Abbott had a two-on-one break from the Sacred Heart blue line in. The duo, however, was thwarted by a fantastic post-to-post pad save by Sacred Heart goalie Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC) to keep the Pioneers in the game.
Cornell would break through for a third goal at the 17:44 mark when the Big Red captain Mike Knoepfli sent a shot from the right face-off circle that bounced off a couple of players in front of LaPointe, changing direction and hitting the back of the net.
The lone Sacred Heart goal would come just :13 later at the 17:57 mark. Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) won an offensive zone face-off back to Frederic Harland (Rosemere, QC) who touched the puck to Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB). Larson would up and sent a laser to the short side of Big Red goalie David McKee to make the score 3-1.
The Pioneers started the third period on the power play, but were unable to cut the lead any further before Cornell used a six minute, four-goal third period binge to put the Pioneers away.
LaPointe ended the night with 28 saves, while McKee made 24 for Cornell. The loss drops Sacred Heart back to the .500 mark at 3-3-0, but SHU remains undefeated in Atlantic Hockey at 3-0-0. The Pioneers continue a four-game non-conference road trip when they head to Columbus, OH for a weekend set with The Ohio State University on November 5 and 6.
