Milford, CT - Senior Erik Roos (Milford, CT) scored two third period goals and the Pioneers men's hockey team picked up their first win of the season 3-0 over Canisius at Milford Ice Pavilion Friday night.
After battling through the first two periods even, senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) finally got the Pioneers on the board six minutes into the third period. When the Griffs Mike Ruberto was called for a boarding penalty, the Pioneers set up on the power play. After Alexandre Parent's (Boisbriand, QC) shot was stopped by Griffs goaltender Ryan Hatch, Molinaro was there to clean up the rebound for his first goal of the season
Once Molinaro got things started, the Pioneers didn't let up. Roos would score his first goal of the year after sophomore Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) flipped a pass up the ice in transition. Roos let a wrist shot go that found the back of the net for a 2-0 Pioneer lead.
In a final attempt to score, the Griffins pulled Hatch from the net with 1:48 remaining. However, just 12 seconds later, Roos tracked down a free puck up the ice and finished off the empty netter and the Pioneer win.
"I was impressed with the work ethic tonight," head coach Shaun Hannah said after the game. "These guys really wanted to put on a good show for the home opener."
The teams played the first two periods to a standstill, with each team trading momentum spurts. The Pioneers got a huge boost when they were able to kill off a five minute major penalty to Andrew Billinghurst (Ft. Collins, CO) for hitting from behind.
Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) was solid in net for the Pioneers, making 24 saves for his first shutout of the season, and the first of his career. It was the first Pioneer shutout since 2003-04. Hatch made 21 saves for the Griffins.
The Pioneers and Griffins will face off again Saturday night in Milford. The puck is set to drop at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:00 pm.
