Detroit, MI - Freshman Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) scored the game winning goal with 4:28 left in the third period and Sacred Heart hung on to defeat Wayne State, 2-1, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Jarman's goal was set up by senior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY). Ferraro carried the puck over the blueline and tried to put the puck between the pads of Will Hooper. Hooper stopped Ferraro's bid but the puck slid to the side where Jarman was able to lift the puck into the top corner of the net for his first goal as a Pioneer.
Wayne State got on the board first when Jeff Caister scored with 1:15 left in the first period. Jared Katz led a rush up ice and carried the puck into the Sacred Heart zone. He was taken out of the play by the Pioneer defender, but the puck slid back to Caister who ripped a shot from the blue line that beat Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) on the glove side.
After a scoreless, physical second period, the Pioneers tied the game with 8:05 left in the third. Junior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) took a pass from sophomore Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) and blasted a shot that went right by Hooper and into the back of the net. It was Parent's first goal of the season.
In the physical game, the Pioneers out shot the Warriors 22-20. Hooper made 20 saves for Wayne State while Drew stopped 19 shots to earn his first victory of the season.
The Pioneers travel to East Lansing on Saturday to face-off with Michigan State. Game time at Munn Ice Arena is 7:00 pm and coverage can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
