Pioneers Fall to RPI, 1-0, in Overtime
Oct. 20, 2007
Troy, NY - Freshman Tyler Helfrich scored the only goal of the game 1:56 into overtime and senior Jordan Alford made 26 saves as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated Sacred Heart University, 1-0, Saturday night at the Houston Field House.
The loss snapped a two game winning streak the Pioneers had over the Engineers. Both teams had a few chances throughout regulation, but both goaltenders were up to the task as Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) made 26 saves for SHU and Alford stopped 28 shots for RPI.
The Engineers scored the game-winner when sophomore defenseman Peter Merth had his shot blocked. The puck came right to senior captain Jake Morissette and he took a shot that was saved by Drew. However, Drew let out a rebound which was batted into the net by Helfrich.
The Pioneers play their home opener Friday night against Canisius in the first Atlantic Hockey game for both teams. Game time at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:05 pm and coverage will be available on WICC 600 AM and the B2 Networks.
