Ice Hockey Falls to Team USA in Exhibition Game, 4-3

Oct. 18, 2003

ORONO, ME - The Sacred Heart University Pioneers fell in the consolation game of the Black Bear Classic 4-3 in overtime to USA Under-18 National Development Team. Team USA scored all four goals on the power play, going 4/11 in the game.

The Pioneers opened the game with an early power play goal from Erik Roos just 1:56 into the game. Todd Spencer took the initial shot from the blue line and the puck was redirected by Roos. Bernie Chmiel also assisted on the goal.

Play would go back and forth after the goal, with the best scoring opportunity going to Team USA's Tom Fritsche as he moved around the Pioneers defense and was in alone with Sacred Heart goaltender Jason Smith. Fritsche would try a stuff attempt, but couldn't get the puck through Smith's pads.

The Pioneers would increase their lead to 2-0 as Peter Giatrelis banged home his own rebound into a wide-open net. Pierre-Luc O'Brien assisted on the goal.

Team USA would then get a power play just seconds after the goal was scored but Smith made several big saves to keep Team USA off the board.

After the power play ended Rocco Molinaro took a pass from Roos for a break away, beating Team USA goaltender Chris Carlson. Roos and O'Brien assisted on the goal, which closed out the scoring in the first period.

The second period would begin with some physical play as Roos and Brett Bevis mixed things up less than two minutes in. Both would receive roughing minors and Roos received and extra minor for slashing. The Pioneers would successfully kill the penalty with Team USA having only one quality scoring chance.

The Pioneers would be back in the box again on consecutive penalties by Garrett Larson and Team USA would finally get on the board with a power play goal from Fritsche midway through the period. Assisting on the goal were Nate Hagemo and Matt Auffrey.

The Team USA goal was very similar fashion to that of the first Pioneers goal as Hagemo took the initial shot from the blue line and had it tipped by Fritsche.

The Pioneers would then get a power play just moments after the goal and yielded a two-man breakaway for Team USA. Chad Kolarik would take the shot and was stopped by Smith. Just before that play Marc-Andre Fournier had a tip attempt in front of the Team USA net that was stopped by Carlson.

The Pioneers would start the third period already down a man when Noel Henck was given a roughing penalty 10 seconds into the period and Team USA would take advantage with a goal from Kolarik at 1:04. Hagemo and Kevin Porter assisted on the goal as Team USA pulled within one goal of Sacred Heart at 3-2.

Team USA would get their ninth power play eight minutes into the period and tied the game at 3-3. Auffrey blasted a shot from the blue line that got through a crowd in front of the net and beat Smith.

That score would hold through the remainder of the third period as the game would head to overtime. The Pioneers would be shorthanded again and Team USA would scored their fourth power play goal of the game. Kolarik netted the game winner from Bryan Lerg and Brandon Scero.
