West Point, NY - Sophomore Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) scored the game tying goal with 16:15 left in the third period and Sacred Heart and Army skated to a 2-2 tie in men's ice hockey action Saturday night at Tate Rink. The game was the first AHA contest for both teams this season.
Trapp's tying goal came on a rebound in front of the Black Knights' goal. After Army goaltender Josh Kassel stopped an intial shot by freshman Nick Johson (Windsor, CT), Trapp picked up the loose puck on the side and put it around Kassel for his first goal of the year.
The Pioneers took the lead at the 12:23 mark of the first period when senior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) scored his second goal of the season. Junior Scott Marchesi (Candle Lake, SK) fired a shot from the right blue line that was stopped by Kassel. However, Ferraro was right in the middle of the ice to pound home the puck and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead after one period.
Sophomore Will Ryan tied the game for the Black Knights with a power play goal with 7:27 left in the second period. As the Black Knights cycled the puck with the extra man, Owen Meyer dropped it off to Ryan who slapped a shot from the top of circles that went past the right side of Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) to even the score after two periods.
Junior Bryce Hollweg gave the Black Knights their first lead of the game 1:32 into the third period with another power play goal. Luke Flicek threw a shot at the net that was stopped by Drew. However, Hollweg was standing at the corner of the net to pop in the rebound.
In the back and forth, action packed game, the Pioneers ended up outshooting the Black Knights 38-31. Kassel was impressive, stopping 36 Pioneer shots while Drew made 29 saves to earn a point for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers travel to Buffalo next weekend for a pair of games against Canisius. Game time at Buffalo State Arena is Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
