Oct. 11, 2008
MILFORD, CT - Josh Frieder scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lift the Air Force Falcon men's hockey team to a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart University in an Atlantic Hockey battle Saturday night.
The Pioneers, 0-2, opened the scoring just 1:13 into the game when Evan Mladenoff redirected a Gregg Rodriguez shot past Air Force goalie Andrew Volkening. SHU killed off two penalties it committed in the period and went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead, despite being outshot 7-6.
Air Force, 2-0, evened the game 7:05 into the second period on a Matt Fairchild wrister from the left circle. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead on a Jacques Lamoureux power play goal from Greg Flynn and Brent Olson.
Sacred Heart looked to have an excellent chance to tie the game when the Pioneers were awarded a five-minute power play on a hit from behind by the Falcon's Tim Kirby. Kirby was also given a game misconduct. The Falcons dug in and killed off the major but SHU finally tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Dave Jarman at 10:05.
Frieder scored his first of the night with just 2:06 left in the game to give Air Force a 3-2 lead, but SHU captain Dave Grimson tied it less than a minute later to tie it at 3-3 and send it to overtime. Sacred Heart outshot the Falcons 14-3 in the period.
Frieder got the winner from Brett Olson and Jeff Hajner, beating SHU goalie Stefan Drew. Drew made 21 saves, while Andrew Volkening made 25 saves in earning his second straight win.
