Men's Ice Hockey Drops Season Opener to Air Force, 4-1
Oct. 10, 2008
Milford, CT - Senior Brent Olson and sophomore Jacques Lamoureux each had a goal and an assist and goaltender Andrew Volkening made 27 saves to lead Air Force to a 4-1 victory in season-opening Atlantic Hockey action Friday at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
After a scoreles but heavy-hitting first period, the Pioneers had the first good scoring chance one minute into the second period when sophomore Evan Mladenoff (Leawood, KS) was taken down on a breakaway by the Falcon's Brent Olson and was awarded a penalty shot. Mladenoff moved in and tried to slide the puck around Volkening but the Falcons' goaltender held his ground and denied the chance.
Olson put the Falcons' on the board at the 4:36 mark of the second period when he took a pass from Josh Frider in the slot and snapped a shot past SHU goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB). Just over one minute later, Matt Fairchild notched a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0.
Junior Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) scored the Pioneers' first goal of the year at the 6:03 mark, 20 seconds after Fairchild's tally. Senior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) fired a shot from the right face-off circle and Johnson tipped it in from the side of the net. Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) had the secondary assist.
The game turned in the final minute of the second period. Sophomore Scott Kozlak carried the puck down the ice for the Falcons and ripped a shot on goal. Drew got a glove on the puck, but couldn't fully control it and the rebound bounced back into the middle of the ice. After Mike Phillipich missed a rebound chance, Paul Weisbarger converted on the third chance to give the Falcons a two goal lead after two periods.
Air Force dominated the third period, out-shooting the Pioneers 16-8 in the final stanza. The only goal came at the 7:29 mark when Lamoreux bounced a puck off Drew's shoulder and it trickled into the net for a score.
The Falcons held a 36-28 advantage in shots for the game. Drew made 32 saves for the Pioneers in the losing effort.
Sacred Heart and Air Force close out their series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
