Pioneers Cruise Past Ryerson in Scrimmage
Oct. 9, 2005
Milford, CT - Freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) and senior Peter Giatrelis (Hamden, CT) each scored two goals as the Pioneers men's ice hockey team opened their 2005-06 season by shutting out Ryerson 7-0 in exhibition action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavillion.
After a first period where both teams seemed to be feeling each other out, Trapp got the Pioneers on the board less then two minutes into the second when he took a cross ice pass from Pierre Luc-O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) and fired it into the corner of the net for the first goal of the year.
Giatrelis scored the next two goals on passes from freshman defenseman Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK). On the first goal, which came 8 minutes into the second, junior Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) got an assist. The second goal about five minutes later came when Giatrelis deflected a Grimson slapshot past Ryerson goalkeeper Mark Furman.
O'Brien, the Pioneers leading scorer last year, would get his first goal near the end of the second period when he converted a breakaway attempt.
Trapp got his second goal of the game 5 minutes into the third off a centering pass from senior Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA). Assistant captain Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) scored the sixth goal of the game on a feed from new line mate Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC). Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) closed out the scoring for the Pioneers with 5 minutes left in the game.
The Pioneers kept the pressure on the entire game, out shooting the Pioneers 47-29.
Junior Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC), the Pioneers new starting goaltender, made 16 saves through the first two periods. Freshman Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) made 13 saves in the final period in his first action as a Pioneer.
The Pioneers open the regular season Friday night at Union College. Game time is 7:00 pm.
