Pioneers Fall to Air Force in AHA Semifinals, 5-4, in Overtime

Rochester, NY - Junior Josh Print scored the game winning goal 8:04 into overtime as Air Force posted a 5-4 win over Sacred Heart in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals Friday night at Blue Cross Arena.
The game winning goal came on a deflection. Sophomore Greg Flynn ripped the initial shot from the blue line and Print was in front to redirect the puck past Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) for the game winning goal.
Air Force scored the first goal of the game, jumping on top at the 15:58 mark of the first period. Brett Nylander fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Smith. However, the rebound fell at the feet of Jay Medenhadlt who whacked the puck into the net.
The Falcons opened up a 2-0 lead just 41 seconds into the second period. Matt Charboneau ripped a shot from the point and junior Mike Phillipich was in front to defelect the puck through the legs of Smith for his 15th goal of the season.
Sophomore Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) got the Pioneers on the board at the 7:33 mark of the second period. Trapp corralled a rebound following a shot by senior Todd Spencer (Brentwood, NH). His first shot was stopped but Trapp was able to spin around to his backhand and lift the next opportunity into the top left corner of the goal.
Freshman Matt Fairchild gave the Falcons a two goal lead again with 6:40 left in the second period. Fairchild picked up a loose puck in the offensive zone and squeezed a backhand shot into the top corner of the net, just over the shoulder of Smith to make the score 3-1.
Sacred Heart got off to a hot start in the third period, scoring two goals in just over four minutes to tie the game. Sophomore Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) got it started 1:18 into the period with a power play goal on a rocket shot from the point. Sophomore Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) tied the game at the 4:06 mark. Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) fed Jarman a pass in the slot from the corner and Jarman snapped a shot past Ben Worker to tie the game at three.
Giosa gave the Pioneers the lead 7:50 into the third. Jarman threw a puck from the corner out to Giosa in slot and Giosa ripped a shot past Worker for his 12th goal of the year.
Senior Billy Devoney tied the game with 54 seconds left in regulation. With the Air Force net empty, a scrambled ensued in front of the Pioneer net and Devoney whacked a loose puck into the net for his fifth tally of the year.
Smith made 29 saves in the goal while Worker stopped 20 shots. Both teams were 1-6 on the power play.
The Pioneers finish the season 21-11-4.
