Rochester, NY - Junior Matt Lundin made 38 saves and four different Laker players scored goals as Mercyhurst posted a 4-1 win over Sacred Heart in the Atlantic Hockey Final Five Game Friday night at Blue Cross Arena.
Matt Pierce and the Lakers drew first blood 6:16 into the contest. After a Sacred Heart penalty put the Lakers on a power play, junior Brett Robinson won the ensuing faceoff and freshman Jeff Terminesi found Pierce, who beat Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB), giving his team a 1-0 lead.
We had a lot of chances to score in the first period and just couldn't take advantage of them, senior captain Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) said.
Sacred Heart evened the score three minutes later on a power play goal from Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON), and the Pioneers went on to out-shoot the Lakers 11-4 in the period. But Lundin stopped 10 of those shots to keep the score tied after one period.
Early in the second period, Lundin warded off several Pioneer shots, and 1:58 in, Cullen Eddy tallied his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner after picking up a lose puck and scoring with a Pioneer defender on his hip.
Chris Risi put the game on ice with 2:30 left when he out-raced a Pioneer as the puck drifted in the Sacred Heart zone. His shot over Drew's left shoulder capped the Lakers' scoring.
The Pioneers finish the season 16-19-3. They will graduate only three seniors, one of whom is Parent. The Pioneer captain finishes his career with 142 points, tied for second in school history. His 87 assists also put him in second place all-time.
"We were a young team this year and struggled with consistency at times," head coach Shaun Hannah said. "But with Alex as the leader this team grew and learned alot this season."
