MILFORD, CT (March 11, 2006) - The University of Connecticut's Brad Smith set a new school record with 52 saves and Matt Scherer scored a hat-trick as the #6th-seeded Husky hockey team posted a 4-1 win over the #3 Sacred Heart Pioneers in the opening round of the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The Huskies lit the lamp first Saturday night as Scherer fired a shot under SHU's Jason Smith's (St. Lambert, QC) arm just over five minutes into the game, with Charles Solberg and Chris Uber assisting on the play.
UConn struck again in the 13th minute, going up 2-0 on Scherer's second of the night, tipping home a shot from Chris Myrho. The Pioneers broke through offensively at 18:38 when Peter Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) scored his sixth of the season off a feed from Erik Roos (Milford, CT) behind the net.
The Huskies bounced the lead back to two with the only goal in the second period when Scott McDougall blasted a shot just under the cross bar for a 3-1 advantage at 13:42. UConn fended off every Pioneer offensive chance in the third and tacked on an empty net goal at 18:54 as Scherer finished off the play for the hat trick.
The Pioneers struggled all night on the power-play, coming up empty on 10 opportunities. The Connecticut defense sank in defensively in the third and Smith turned away shot after shot.
The loss was just the Pioneers second at home this season, both coming at the hands of the Huskies. SHU ends the year 21-12-2.
UConn advances to the semifinal round of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs next weekend in Worcester, Mass. at Holy Cross College.
