Milford, CT - Sophomore Michael Coppola scored the game winning goal 5:28 into overtime to give UConn a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart in game two of the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The series is tied at one game apiece with the deciding game three set for Sunday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
In a game highlighted by excellent goaltending, the Huskies Beau Erickson outdueled SHU's Stefan Drew (Oakbank. MB). Erickson stopped 31 of the 33 shots he saw while Drew made 33 saves on 36 shots.
The game winner was set-up when Coppola and senior Charles Solberg broke out on a two-on-one rush. Solberg carried the puck into the zone and dished it through the slot to Coppola who redirected it past a driving Drew and into the goal for the game winner.
The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead when Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) scored off an assist from Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) and Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) at the 7:09 mark of the first period. The Huskies answered at the 9:46 mark in the first period when Jason Krispel scored off a feed from Andrew Olson to tie the game 1-1.
After a scoreless second period, the Huskies grabbed the lead at the 6:08 mark of the third period when Andrew Olson scored his team leading 14th goal of the season. After Chris Spicer's original shot was stopped by Drew, Olson picked up the rebound and fired it home.
Freshman Evan Mladenoff (Leawood, KS) got the Pioneers to overtime when he scored his first career goal with 1:58 remaining in regulation. Mladenoff took a pass from Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA), weaved through the UConn defenders and snapped a backhand shot past Erickson to tie the game.
Game three of the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals between Sacred Heart and UConn will be held Sunday night at 7:05 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
