Milford, CT - Junior Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) had two goals and two assists and sophomore Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) added a goal and an assist to lead Sacred Heart to a 4-2 win over UConn in a first round Atlantic Hockey Playoff game Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Pioneers now advance to the AHA quarterfinals at Air Force next weekend.
Both teams had quality chances throughout the game as both goaltender came up with excellent saves. SHU's Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) finished the game with 36 saves while the Huskies Brad McInnis stopped 28 shots. The Huskies had a 38-32 shots advantage.
Jarman opened the scoring at the 11:01 mark of the first period, taking a pass from Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) in the slot and snapping a wrist shot past McInnis to put the Pioneers on the board. Grimson had two assists on the night.
After taking the one goal lead into the locker-room, the Pioneers extended the edge to two goals 7:59 into the middle period as Knowlton scored his second goal of the season following a scrum in front of the Pioneer net. The Huskies got on the board at the with 8:12 left in the second when Justin Hernandez put a back-hander high over Drew's shoulder for his eighth goal of the year.
Holding a one goal lead in the final period, Jarman extended the advantage at the 8:19 mark, snapping a shot from the slot off a feed from Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC). The Huskies would get within one goal when Chris Waterstradt netted his fourth goal of the year with three minutes left. However, senior Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) buried an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Sacred Heart will travel to Air Force for the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals next weekend. The best of three series will be held in Colorado Springs Friday-Sunday March 13-15.
