ERIE, PA (March 4) - The Mercyhurst Lakers (14-15-1, 13-7-3 AHA) used three power play goals and 28 saves from goaltender Mike Ella to defeat the Sacred Heart Pioneers (13-19-1, 13-9-1 AHA) in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night.

The Lakers would jump in front early, scoring a pair of first period goals just 58 seconds apart. David Wrigley netted the firt of the game at 7:40 and Dave Borrelli knocked in the first of three Mercyhurst power play goals at 8:32 to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

A TJ Kemp goal in the second period would up the Laker lead to 3-0 before Sacred Heart would finally get on the board in the final stanza. It would be Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC) netting a power play goal 6:25 into the final period to slice the Mercyhurst lead to 3-1. Andrew Billinghurst (Ft. Collins, CO) and Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburg, PA) assisted on the tally.

Any momentum the Pioneers built up was quickly erased at the 9:41 mark as the Lakers splurged for three goals over the last 11 minutes to bury Sacred Heart 6-1.

The Pioneers and the Lakers face off again Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena in Erie, PA. The puck drops at 7:30 PM.
