Milford, CT - Freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) had a hat trick and senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) added one goal and two assists on senior night as Sacred Heart beat Connecticut 8-3 in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The win kept the Pioneers (21-10-2, 18-7-2 AHA) in first place in the league standings heading into the regular season finale Saturday night. Sacred Heart will clinch the top seed in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament with a win Saturday night.
Trapp got the Pioneers started 8:14 into the contest with a power play goal. As the Pioneers set up with the man advantage, Molinaro fed Trapp a cross ice pass and he fired a shot past Huskies' goaltender Jon Anderson. Senior Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) also had an assist on Trapp's 14th goal of the year.
The Pioneers went up 2-0 on a shorthanded tally by junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) with 6:02 left in the opening period. O'Brien joined sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) on an up-ice rush and buried a touch feed for his team leading 19th goal of the season. Goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert,QC), who made the outlet pass to Parent, was credited with an assist, his first point of the year.
Junior Scott McDougall got the Huskies on the board with 4:28 left in the first. With the Huskies on the power play, McDougall moved in and fired a wrist shot past Smith for the first of two goals he had on the night.
The Pioneers scored four goals in the second period to blow the game open. Molinaro got things started 1:31 into the stanza when he tipped home a blast by defenseman Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME). Freshman Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) tallied his first of two goals 2:21 later to give the Pioneers a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) made it 5-1 at the 11:02 mark with his second goal of the year.
Freshman Chris Myrho cut the Husky deficit to 5-2 with 6:41 left in the second. As Smith tried to clear the puck from in front of his net, Myhro intercepted the puck and popped it through Smith's five hole. It was Myhro's team leading 13th goal of the year.
Grimson put a cap on the second period scoring with 47 seconds remaining in the period. After taking a pass from O'Brien he moved in and fired a shot past new Husky goaltender Scott Tomes for his fourth goal of the year.
The Huskies cut the Pioneer lead to 6-3 with 13:21 left in the third period on McDougall's second goal of the game and eighth of the season. Trapp scored the game's final two goals in a 1:22 second span in the final period. The first came after a shot by O'Brien was stopped by Tomes. Trapp, who was trailing the play, was in perfect position to pick up the rebound and flipped it into the net.
Trapp finished the scoring the same way he started it. With the Pioneers on a power play, Molinaro fed a cross ice pass to Trapp who fired a shot past Tomes to complete the hat trick. The trio of goals brought Trapp's total to 16 on the year.
Smith finished the game with 30 saves in net for the Pioneers. Anderson stopped 10 shots before being lifted for Tomes who stopped 20 shots for the Huskies.
