West Point, NY - Sophomore Owen Meyer scored the go ahead goal early in the third period and senior Bryce Hollweg added two assists as Army held on for a 3-2 win in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at Tate Rink.
The Pioneers finished the regular season 14-11-3 in AHA play and will be the #4 seed in the AHA tournament. Army won the regular season championship and will be the top seed in the playoffs.
Sacred Heart got on the board first when senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) scored a powerplay goal on a feed from junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) 7:18 into the game. The goal was Parent's team leading 15th goal of the season and extended his point streak to 16 consecutive games.
Senior Robb Ross got the Black Knights even at the 9:36 mark of the first period. After a scoreless second period, Meyer scored gave Arny the lead for good 1:27 into the third period.
Zach McKelvie scored a powerplay goal at the 6:15 mark of the third period to make it 3-1 in favor of the Black Knights. Sophomore Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) scored his first career goal with 3:58 left to draw the Pioneers closer but it was too little too late.
For the second straight night, the game featured a multitude of penalties. The Pioneers piled up 49 penalty minutes while Army was whistled for 30 minutes of infractions.
Army held a 43-23 shot advantage over the Pioneers. Josh Kassel made 21 saves to earn the victory while Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) stopped 40 shots in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart will host the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals against UConn next weekend at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The best of three series will be held March 7-9. Face-off of each game will be at 7:05 pm.
