Feb. 28, 2010
Colorado Springs, CO - The Air Force Falcons scored three power play goals and two short handed markers as they defeated the Sacred Heart men’s ice hockey team 8-1 Saturday night, completing the series sweep. Jacques Lamourex and Blake Page each scored twice while starting goaltender Andrew Volkening made 19 saves for the Falcons. The Pioneers wrap up the regular season with 18 victories and are second in the Atlantic Hockey standings.
Air Force (14-14-6, 14-8-6 AHA) exploded late in the opening period, scoring three goals in the final four minutes of what had been an evenly played stanza. Lamoureux had a chance to open the scoring midway through the period but rang the pipe with the net wide open on the power play. The Falcons would break through with 3:55 remaining in the period as Page intercepted a SHU pass while on the penalty kill and streaked down the ice finishing a break away opportunity to score a short handed goal and make it a 1-0 game.
The Falcons would strike again with 1:16 on the clock as Tim Kirby fired a wrist shot on goal and Lamoureux slammed home the rebound for his 19th of the season. Air Force would light the lamp one more time before the period’s end, capitalizing on a five-on-three power play. Lamoureux and Kirby would again combine for the Air Force goal and assist, respectively.
Sacred Heart (18-12-4, 16-8-3 AHA) had several chances in the first half of the second period but were unable to convert and cut into the Air Force lead. Evan Mladenoff (Leawood, KS) had a short handed break away of his own but missed the net just wide on the back hand. Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) ripped a one timer from the right circle at the 12:00 minute mark but was robbed by Volkening. Shortly after Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) earned two chances at point blank range after making a good move to beat the defense but he was turned away by a pair of sparkling saves.
Air Force would again own the second half of the frame, Page started the run with his second short handed goal of the day. The Falcons would score a fifth unanswered goal on the power play as Stephen Carew took a shot from the slot that went off the crossbar and in. Derrick Burnett would post his eighth marker of the season with 3:25 remaining in the period to make it a 6-0 game. Kyle De Laurell would capitalize on another five-on-three power play for the Falcons with just 20 seconds remaining in the period, sending the game into the second intermission, 7-0.
The Falcons would pick up right where they left off after the break, scoring an eighth goal 4:37 into the final frame off the stick of Sean Bertsch. The Pioneers would finally break into the scoring column as Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) forced a turnover in the Air Force end and found the back of the net for his tenth marker of the year.
Despite the loss the Pioneers finish the season 15-3-2 in their last 20 games. Sacred Heart returns to action at home in two weeks, March 12th at 7:05 pm, in the quarterfinals of the AHA tournament as the #2 seed.
