NORTHFORD, CT (February 25, 2005) - The Quinnipiac Bobcats (16-12-3, 13-6-2 AHA) used a pair of third period goals, including an empty netter, to slip past the Sacred Heart Pioneers (13-17-1, 13-7-1 AHA) in an Atlantic Hockey battle Friday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion.
It would be the Bobcats who would strike first early in the opening period. Quinnipiac's Jamie Bates sent a shot toward the goal, which deflected off the leg of a Pioneer defender and found its way through the legs of a crossed-up Kevin LaPointe (Quebec City, QC) to put the Bobcats up 1-0 just 4:06 into the period. Sacred Heart would respond just under four minutes later, as freshman Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) was Johnny on the spot capitalizing on a mistake by Bobcat net minder Jamie Holden and the Bobcat defense. After saving a slap shot off the stick of Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME), Holden couldn't control and the defense couldn't clear leaving Kary an easy chip in goal to equalize for the Pioneers. The Pioneers were out shot by a margin of 15-7 in the period, but LaPointe kept the Bobcat attack in check.
Quinnipiac kept the pressure on Sacred Heart in the second period, and took their second lead of the game off a defensive miscue by the Pioneers. After Ben Nelson intercepted a clearing attempt and sent a pass Jamie Bates. Bates then one-timed a pass in the slot to Chris White. White collected the puck and fired a wrist shot top shelf, past the glove of LaPointe. Another Pioneer mis-step would lead to the Bobcats third goal of the game at the 10:42 mark. With the teams skating four-a-side Matt Sorterberg sent an ambitious to Matt Froehlich at the Pioneer blue line. The pass found its way past the stick of a Pioneer defenseman and left Froehlich with a breakaway from the blue line in. Froehlich skated in on LaPointe, picked a corner and nailed it for the 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers, down two goals, refused to give up and battled back to tie the contest at 3-3 in a span of just 1:09. Sacred Heart cut the lead to 3-2 taking advantage of their third power play of the game. Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) fired a slap shot on Holden that he wasn't able to corral. Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) took advantage and slid the puck home for his 12th power play goal of the season. The Pioneers would use the momentum from the O'Brien power play goal to knot the score at 3-3 when Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) banged home Peter Ferraro (Pleasanteville, NY) rebound.
Any thoughts of completing the comeback were dashed in the third period by the Bobcats. Quinnipiac went ahead for good 11:04 into the frame when a Sorterberg slap shot caught a part of LaPointe glove and had enough momentum to carry it into the net. From there Quinnipiac would add an empty netter with just six seconds remaining to seal the victory.
LaPointe would end the night with 32 saves in taking the loss while Holden stopped 23 for the victory.
The two teams will tangle again tomorrow evening for the back end of the home and home series at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face off is at 5:00 PM.
