Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Mercyhurst 3-2 In Overtime

ERIE, PA - The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team extended their winning streak to seven games after pulling out a 3-2 overtime win at Mercyhurst on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Pierre-Luc O'Brien netted the game-winning goal 54-seconds into the extra frame for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead with 3:45 remaining in the opening period when Garrett Larson scored his team leading sixth power play goal of the season. Konn Hawekes and Mike Reagan assisted on the goal.

The Lakers fought back in the second frame and tied the game on David Wrigley's 13th goal of the season an took the lead at 14:08 of the period on Preston Briggs first goal of the season.

SHU responded just 2:10 later as Larson netted his second goal of the game to tie it at 2-2 with assist from Marc-Andre Fournier and Rocco Molinaro.

That score held through the end of regulation and sent the game into overtime when O'Brien netted his 12th goal of the season from Todd Spencer and Chuck Metcalfe.

Kevin LaPointe made 19 saves in recording his 10th win of the season while Andy Franck stopped 30 shots in taking the loss.

Sacred Heart will next travel to Canisius for a 5:00 pm game on Saturday, February 21st.
