Milford, CT - The Pioneers scored three times in the third period as SHU completed its first third period comeback of the season with a 3-1 win over Holy Cross Friday night. Freshman Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) took center stage on senior night as he netted the Pioneers final two goals of the game. Senior Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) posted three assists in his final regular season home game at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Sacred Heart (17-10-4, 15-7-3 AHA) outshot the Crusaders 12-9 in the first period but neither team would be able to break the ice in the first frame. Delong nearly opened the scoring with 6:30 remaining in the period when he found himself alone in the slot but his back handed shot floated just wide of the net. Anthony Yelovich (Little Falls, NJ) would also just miss on a similar chance two minutes later after Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) forced a Holy Cross turnover at neutral ice. Delong would have one more solid opportunity, this time short-handed, in the closing moments of the period but Crusader goaltender Thomas Tysowsky made one of his 35 stops to keep the game scoreless at the first intermission.
Holy Cross (10-16-6, 9-12-4 AHA) had the better scoring chances in the second period and outshot Sacred Heart 13-10. The Crusaders nearly lit the lamp in the opening minute of the stanza as Luke Miller had a chance in transition before Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made a sharp pad save, one of his 29 in the victory. Holy Cross would score the opening goal at the midway point in the period as captain Ryan Driscoll roofed a shot on a two-on-one opportunity with teammate Andrew Cox.
The Pioneers would recover with an explosive third period starting with a break away goal from Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO), his 12th marker of the season. The goal allowed the 726 fans in attendance, the biggest crowd for a home game this season, to erupt for the first time in the contest and helped the huge momentum shift. Delong followed Knowlton's goal three minutes later as he notched his 11th of the year on a deflection. Defenseman Alex Stuart (Sauk Rapids, MN) provided the initial wrist shot that Delong redirected through the five hole of Tysowsky to give SHU a 2-1 edge. Delong would ice the game with 1:35 remaining on a transition goal set up by a perfect pass from Boisvert.
SHU needs just one more victory to clinch a home playoff series in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Hockey tournament. They will get a chance to earn those points as they complete their home and home series with Holy Cross tomorrow night at 7:05 pm in Worcester, MA.
