Pioneers Settle For 2-2 Tie with AIC

W. Springfield, MA - Senior Preston Cicchine scored with 2:23 left in regulation as American International rallied for a 2-2 tie with Sacred Heart in men's ice hockey action Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center.
Cicchine's goal was set up on a head long pass from sophomore Mark Pavli. Cicchine moved up ice and flipped a wrist shot under the right arm of Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB).
Senior Jereme Tendler put the Yellow Jackets on the board first 3:31 into the opening period. Drew made a save on Tendler's initial shot, but Tendler followed the play and poked home his own rebound for his 13th goal of the season.
The Pioneers tied the game with 6:54 left in the first period. During a Sacred Heart power play, senior Bernie Chmiel (Pittsbugh, PA) blasted a shot from the blueline that was stopped by Yellow Jackets goaltender Tom Fenton. However, senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) was in front to tip home the rebound. Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) also had an assist on Molinaro's 10th goal of the season.
O'Brien's assist gave him 41 total points on the season, tying the school record for most points in a season.
Sophomore Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) gave the Pioneers with a hard slapshot goal with 11:16 left in regulation. Marchesi picked up a loose puck at the blue line and blasted a shot the found its way just under the cross bar, giving him his third goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets outshout the Pioneers 40-38 for the game. Fenton made 36 saves in net for AIC while Drew stopped 38 Yellow Jacket shots.
The Pioneers (18-10-2, 15-7-2 AHA) will face Holy Cross in a critical home and home series next weekend. The opener is Friday night in Worcester and the rematch Saturday night in Milford. Game time both nights is 7:00 pm.
