Pioneers Sting Yellow Jackets
Feb. 17, 2006
Milford, CT - Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) had one goal and two assists and freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) added one goal and two assists as Sacred Heart went on to beat American International 4-1 in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The win, coupled with a loss by Mercyhurst to Holy Cross moved the Pioneers (18-10-1, 15-7-1 AHA) within one point of second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings. They still trail Holy Cross by four points for first.
The Yellow Jackets jumped on top first when junior Ryan Robin scored his seventh goal of the year at the 3:30 mark of the opening period. Robin took a head long pass up ice from sophomore Jereme Tendler and fired a shot past Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC).
Sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) tied the game for the Pioneers with 13:39 left in the first period. With Sacred Heart on the power play, O'Brien fed a pass cross-ice to Parent who blasted a shot past Yellow Jackets net minder Tom Fenton for his 11th goal of the season.
Trapp scored what turned out to be the game winning goal with 7:32 left in the second period. Trapp took a backdoor pass from O'Brien and tipped it into the net for his 13th goal of the year and the Pioneers second power play tally of the night.
The Pioneers scored two goals in a 21 second span in the third period to put the game away. O'Brien tallied his team leading 16th goal of the season at the 5:25 mark of the final period. Trapp fed O'Brien a pass through the crease and he calmly knocked it home. Then sophomore Nick Kary (Wetaskiwin, AB) scored his first goal of the season with some hard work in front of the net, banging home a loose puck.
O'Brien's three points put him over 100 points for his career and brought his season total to 40, one point shy of the school record for points in a season.
Sacred Heart finished the game 3-4 on the power play while the Yellow Jackets failed to score in six opportunities with the extra skater.
Smith made 30 saves in goal to notch his 15th win of the season, a new school record for most wins by a goaltender in a season.
The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets will face off again Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield, MA. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
