Milford, CT - Milford, CT - Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) scored two goals and junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) added a goal and an assist as Sacred Heart scored four third period goals to post a 6-3 win over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The win moved the Pioneers into second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The two teams split their weekend series and the Pioneers won the season series from the Lakers 2-1-1.
In a game that saw 58 penalty minutes handed out, SHU went 3-for-7 on the powerplay, including two third period goals with the extra attacker. Mercyhurst was 2-for-9 on the powerplay. The parade to the penalty box saw the Pioneers whistled for 15 infractions for a total of 33 minutes and the Lakers recive 11 penalties for a total of 25 minutes.
After a scoreless and relatively quiet first period, the action picked up immediately in the second period when freshman Dan Bremner put Mercyhurst on the board just 46 seconds in. Sophomore Neil Graham led a rush up ice and put a shot on goal that was stopped by SHU netminder Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB). Bremner was trailing the play and swooped in to grab the loose rebound and snap it home for the score.
The Pioneers took the lead late in the second period on quick strikes by Trapp and Parent. With 3:16 left, junior Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) found Trapp with a perfect centering pass from behind the net and Trapp one-timed it past Matt Lundin to tie the score. Just over two minutes later, with 1:07 to go in the period, Parent scored a power-play goal off a feed from Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) to give SHU the lead after two periods.
Sacred Heart's power play continued to click in the third period as sophomore Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) made it 3-1 with an extra-man tally 4:11 into the period. Boisvert took an up-ice pass from Grimson and rushed into the offesnive zone. His first shot was stopped by Lundin but Boisvert smashed home the rebound for his tenth goal of the season.
Junior Matt Pierce drew the Lakers within one goal again at the 6:53 mark with another power-play goal. However, the Pioneers' offense didn't quit as Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) finished off a stellar shift with line-mates Trapp and Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) by scoring his tenth goal of the year at the 9:50 mark to make it 4-2.
Parent scored his second goal of the night on a shorthanded breakaway with 6:12 left in the game. It was the senior's team leading 13th goal of the year and 131st point of his career, bringing him to within two points of third on the all-time Sacred Heart list. Parent is currently on a 12 game point-scoring streak.
A fracas behind the SHU net yielded yet more penalties with 5:21 left in the game and left Mercyhurst with a 4-on-3 power-play. The Lakers, converted as sophomore Matt Fennell found the back of the net with 5:11 left to make it 5-3. However, junior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) potted an empty net goal with 1:11 left to seal the victory.
Lundin stopped 32 shots in goal for the Lakers while Drew made 31 saves to earn the victory.
Sacred Heart will face Holy Cross in a home-and-home series next weekend. The teams meet Friday night at the Hart Center with the rematch coming Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off both nights is 7:05 pm.
