Worcester, MA - Senior Peter Ferraro scored the (Pleasantville, NY) game winning goal and Sacred Heart tallied four goals in the second period to post a 5-4 win over Holy Cross in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Hart Center.
Ferraro's game winner was set-up on a turnover in the Crusader zone. Ferraro picked up the loose puck, deked to his backhand and slid the puck around Crusader goaltender Tyler Chestnut for the deciding tally.
Senior James Sixsmith opened the scoring for the Crusaders with 2:23 left in the first period. Sixsmith took a pass from Dale Reinhardt, moved into the Pioneer zone and ripped a shot past Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) for his 14th goal of the year.
Holy Cross opened up a two goal lead at the 3:17 mark of the second period. After a scrum in front of the Pioneer net, freshman Rob Forshner coralled the loose puck and lifted it over a sprawled out Drew to make it 2-0.
The Pioneers got on the board at the 5:27 mark of the second period on a power play goal by Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY). Ferraro took a feed from Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) and fired a shot from the blueline past Ian Dams fro his fourth goal of the year. However, Rob Godfrey scored 2:34 later to give the Crusaders a two goal lead again.
Sacred Heart scored three more goals in the second period to take the lead heading to the third. Junior Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) cut the Pioneer deficit to one at the 9:39 mark. Freshman Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) carried the puck into the offensive zone and fired a shot from the circle that was stopped by Dams, but Marchesi trailed the play and snapped home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
Freshman Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) tied the game with 6:15 left in the second. Parent took the puck behind the Crusader goal-line and threw the puck behind his back to Jarman at the hashmarks. Jarman snapped a shot into the back of the net to tie the game. Sophomore Bear Trapp gave the Pioneers the lead with 2:25 left in the second when he deflected home a rebound after a shot by Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK). Holy Cross tied the game six minutes into the third period on a goal by Sean Nappo.
Holy Cross out shot Sacred Heart 37-34 for the game. Each team scored two power play goals. Drew made 33 saves in net to earn the victory for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers and Crusaders close out their weekend series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
