West Point, NY - Three different Army players scored goals as Army tallied three unanswered goals in the second period to post a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at Tate Rink. Junior Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) scored the only Pioneers goal.
After a scoreless first period, Boisvert got the Pioneers on the board first, scoring his team leading 12th goal of the season 1:03 into the middle stanza. Standing at the goalpost, Boisvert took a pass from senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) and tipped a one-timer that just trickled over the pads of Army goaltender Jay Clark and into the net.
For the second straight night, Army dominated the second period, scoring all three goals in a four minute window. Will Ryan got things started with a shorthanded tally at the 7:38 mark of the second period. As Joey Ammon sped up the ice into the offensive zone, he fed a crossing pass to Ryan on the right side who backhanded across the goal, inside the left post to put the Black Knights on the board.
Senior Zach McKelvie gave Army the lead at the 9:26 mark of the second. The captain blasted a shot from the blue-line that SHU goaltender Stefan Drew appeared to misjudge, allowing the puck to go over his shoulder into the goal. Two minutes later, Cody Omilusik slid a shot through Drew's legs to give Army a two goal lead after two periods.
Drew kept the Pioneers in the game for long stretches with several spectacular saves in net. The senior finished with 34 saves in the losing effort. Clark also made 34 saves to earn the victory. Army held a 37-35 advantage in shots.
Sacred Heart will take on AIC in a home-and-home series next week. The series opens Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
