Feb. 10, 2007

Final Stats

Erie, PA - Freshman Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) had two goals, including the game winner, and an assist and Stefan Drew (Dugald,MB) made 31 saves as Sacred Heart held off Mercyhurst, 4-2, in men's ice hockey action Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) scored an empty net goal to seal the game, his 66th career goal, a new Sacred Heart school record.

Jarman's game winner came with the game tied and 9:35 left in the third period. Defenseman Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) fired a shot that was stopped by Laker goaltender Jordan Wakefield. However, the rebound bounced to Jarman on the far side of the net, and pounded home the loose puck for the eventual game winning goal.

The Pioneers jumped on top 7:38 into the first period on a goal by Wright. Jarman carried the puck into the offensive zone and dropped it back to Wright who snapped a shot that went past Laker goaltender Jordan Wakefield on the right side. It was Wright's first goal of the season.

Mercyhurst tied the game at the 9:19 mark of the second period. Cullen Eddy took a pass from Matt Fennell and ripped a shot from the blueline that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.

Jarman gave the Pioneers the lead again 2:10 later off a pass from Eric Giosa (Northville, MI). Giosa dropped the puck from the corner to Jarman at the bottom of the face-off circle. Jarman shot the puck high and it snuck in just between Wakefield's shoulder and the top right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the year.

Senior Kyle Gourgon got the Lakers even again with 2:09 left in the second period. Ryan Toomey carried the puck into the Pioneer zone down the left wing. When defenseman Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) fell down, Toomey moved around him and dropped the puck to Gourgon who ripped a shot from the slot that beat Drew to tie the game.

Sacred Heart's penalty kill was outstanding, holding the Lakers scoreless in seven chances with the man advantage. The Pioneers out-shot the Lakers 38-33 for the game. Wakefield made 34 saves in the loss for the Lakers.

The Pioneers face Holy Cross in a home and home series next weekend. The teams meet Friday night in Worcester and Saturday in Milford. Face-off at the Hart Center is set for 7:00 pm and coverage can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
