Final Stats

Milford, CT - Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) had a goal and an assist and goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) made 29 saves to earn his second shutout of the year as Sacred Heart completed a season sweep of Connecticut with a 4-0 win Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

Sacred Heart got off to a fast start as junior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) scored 3:38 into the game. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) moved down the wing and fed Giosa a pass in the slot and Giosa beat Brad McInnis with a shot for his tenth goal of the year.

In a penalty-filled first period the Pioneers were able to hold the Huskies scorless in five chances with the man advantage. SHU widened their lead early in the second when Parent and senior Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) converted a rush opportunity. Marchesi carried the puck into the offensive zone and slid it through the goal mouth to Parent who redirected it into the open corner of the net to make it 2-0.

The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead on a slapshot by junior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) with 4:32 left in the second. Grimson wound up and fired a shot from the blueline that appeared to sneak under the crossbar. Initially, the officials did not signal a goal. However, at the next stoppage of play, the officials conferenced with the goal judge and ruled the play a goal. Parent and Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) got assists on Grimson's fifth goal of the year.

Freshman Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) notched his third goal of the season with 7:36 left in the game to complete the scoring. Freshman Adam DeJong (Kitchener, ON) carried the puck behind the net and found Knowlton out in front where he put the puck home for the score.

Sacred Heart outshot UConn 36-29 for the game. The Huskies finished the game 0-for-8 on the powerplay while the Pioneers scored once in three chances with the extra skater.

The sweep marked the first time Sacred Heart has ever swept the season series with UConn. It is also the first time the Pioneers have won a season series from the Huskies since the 2003-04 season.

The Pioneers will host Mercyhurst in a two game series next weekend. The teams meet Friday and Saturday night at 7:05 pm at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
