Erie, PA - Sophomore Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) scored two goals and sophomore Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) added a goal two assists as Sacred Heart outlasted Mercyhurst, 5-2, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win, the Pioneers (16-9-4, 13-6-4 AHA) moved into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings, one point ahead of Army.
The Pioneers jumped on top with a shorthanded goal by senior Drew Sanders (Modesto, CA) with 6:45 left in the first period. Sanders carried the puck into the zone and dropped a pass to Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC). O'Brien wound up to shoot by flubbed the shot and the puck slid right to Sanders who weaved his way around a sprawled out Jordan Wakefield and slid the puck into the net for his second goal of the season.
Just 55 seconds after Sacred Heart took the lead, the Lakers scored a power play goal to tie the game. Junior Matt Warren won an offensive zone face-off back to sophomore Matt Pierce. Pierce switched the puck to his backhand and snapped a shot past Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) for his ninth goal of the year.
Sacred Heart got off to a fast start in the second period, scoring two goals in the first six minutes. Ferraro scored the go-ahead goal 5:15 into the stanza with the Pioneers on the power play. Ferraro wound up fired a shot from the blue line which Wakefield appeared to stop. However, the puck bounced off the shoulder of Wakefield and into the net for Ferraro's second goal of the year.
Giosa gave the Pioneers a two goal lead at the 6:03 mark of the second. Giosa set-up in the left face-off circle, took a pass from Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) and snapped a shot into the upper left corner of the net for his 11th goal of the year.
Mercyhurst cut their deficit to one on a power play goal by Ryan Toomey with 4:03 left in the second. Toomey carried the puck up the ice moved into the offensive zone and fired a shot that beat Smith high to the left side. It was Toomey's 10th goal of the season.
Ferraro scored his second goal of the game at the 9:17 mark of the third period to give the Pioneers a two goal lead again. Ferraro took a cross-ice pass from Giosa and blasted a shot from the face-off circle that rocketed into the back of the net. Junior Scott Marchesi (Candle Lake, SK) tacked on an empty netter with 34 seconds left to close out the scoring. Sophomore Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) picked up assists on the last two Sacred Heart goals.
The Pioneers took advantage of seven power plays, scoring two goals with the man advantage. Merychurst out shot Sacred Heart 33-31 for the game. Smith made 31 saves, including 16 in the third period to earn the victory.
The Pioneers and Lakers close out their weekend series Saturday night. Face-off at the Mercyhurst Ice Center is set for 7:00 pm and coverage can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
