Rochester, NY - Sophomore David Berube (Quebec City, PQ) had two goals, and an assist and senior Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) added a goal and two assists to lead Sacred Heart to a thrilling 6-4 win over RIT in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at Ritter Arena. Trapp's two assists gave him 92 for his career, a new Sacred Heart record. The Pioneers snapped RIT's 11 game winning streak, the longest in the nation.
A roller-coaster game started in Sacred Heart's favor as Trapp put the Pioneers on the board 50 seconds in to the contest. Off an offensive zone face-off, Berube won the draw back to Trapp who one-timed a blast from the slot past RIT goaltender Jared DiMichiel. SHU went up 2-0 with 7:50 left when junior Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, PQ) snapped a hard shot over the DiMichiel's shoulder for his ninth goal of the year.
After going down by two goals, the Tigers stormed back, scoring two goals in 22 seconds to tie the game. With 5:07 left in the first period, Bobby Raymond blasted a rocket from the blue-line to put the Tigers on the board. Sean Murphy tied the game, pounding home a loose puck in front of the SHU net. Murphy scored a second goal with 2:40 left in the period to give RIT the lead after one period.
As they did in the first, the Pioneers came out flying in the second period, tying the game at the 3:42 mark on junior Mike Rosata's (Needham, NH) second goal in as many games. After senior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) put a shot on goal that was blocked away, Rosata came flying into the slot to grab the rebound and rip it into the net.
Berube and Trapp hooked up for the second time at the 8:16 mark to give the Pioneers the lead again. Trapp carried the puck behind the net and fed a perfect centering pass to Berube who one-timed into the goal for his first of the night and the Pioneers took a one goal lead into the locker-room after two periods.
RIT came out flying in the third period and used the energy to tie the game at the 9:18 mark. With the Tigers on the power-play, Al Mazur ripped a shot from the blue-line, beating SHU goaltender Olivier St. Onge (Wickham, PQ) for his fifth goal of the year. Berube scored the game-winning goal with 4:47 remaining in regulation. Freshman Anthony Yelovich (Little Falls, NJ) had his initial shot blocked by DiMichiel and the puck flew into the air. Crashing the net, Berube came flying in and batted the puck out-of mid-air to the ice and it trickled right through DiMichiel's legs and into the goal.
As the Pioneers clung to the one goal lead in the final minutes, St. Onge came up with some of his best saves of the night, finishing the game with 36 saves to earn the victory. Boisvert added an empty netter with 20 seconds left to seal the victory for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart and RIT wrap-up their series Saturday night at Ritter Arena. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
