STORRS, Conn. (February 05) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team cruised to a 5-1 victory over Sacred Heart before a record-setting crowd of 1,752 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday evening. UConn moves its record to 9-19-2 overall with an 8-9-1 record in Atlantic Hockey, while the Pioneers fall to 9-16-1, 9-6-1 in the AHA.
Junior Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) put the Huskies out in front in the first period with his sixth goal of the season from sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) and senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) at 15:27.
UConn then extended its lead to 2-0 as sophomore Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) snapped a quick wrister from the slot past Pioneers' netminder Kevin LaPointe 19:47 into the second off a feed from senior Beau McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman Mike Neilon (St. Paul, Minn.).
The Huskies went on to add three power play goals in the third period to secure the win. Junior Ryan Palmer (Groton, Mass.) notched the first at 3:37 from Olsen. Sophomore B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) followed, posting UConn's fourth goal of the night 10:32 into the stanza off a feed from Koidahl to capitalize on a five-minute major to Erik Roos. Olsen then added the team's second tally in the same man-advantage stint, with assists going to Uber and Neilon at the 11:32 mark.
Sacred Heart's lone goal was scored by Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) from Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) and Andrew Billinghurst 6(Fort Collins, CO):28 into the third period as UConn sophomore netminder Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) turned aside 26 of 27 shots by the Pioneers. LaPointe made 25 saves for Sacred Heart and the Huskies outshot the Pioneers, 30-27.
The Pioneers look to rebound on Tuesday, February 8 when they travel to take on conference rival Army in West Point, NY. Face off is at 7:00 PM
