Pioneers Shut Down Army, 3-0
Feb. 4, 2006
Milford, CT - Sacred Heart scored one goal in each period and freshman Stefan Drew (Dugald, MB) made 27 saves in goal to notch his first career shutout as the Pioneers beat Army, 3-0, in men's ice hockey action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Drew, making just his fourth start in goal, improved his record to 3-1 in his rookie campaign with his performance. The Pioneers upped their record to 17-10-1 overall and 14-7-1 in Atlantic Hockey, and jumped into sole possession of second place in the conference, one point ahead of idle Mercyhurst, and two points behind Holy Cross for first.
Senior Bernie Chmiel (Pittsburgh, PA) opened the scoring for the Pioneers with 5:54 left in the first period. The Pioneers set up their power play in the Army zone and freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) brought the puck behind the net. Chmiel skated down low and Trapp fed him a perfect pass from behind the goal. Chmiel tipped the puck right past Black Knights goaltender Brad Roberts for his fourth goal of the year.
The Pioneers went up 2-0 on a shorthanded tally 8:57 into the second period. Sophomore Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) sent Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) on a rush up the ice. Parent ran out of room and plowed into Roberts but the puck trickled past him and into the goal.
Sacred Heart sealed the victory with a goal at the 12:39 mark of the third period. Trapp led a 2 on 1 Pioneer rush up the ice, joined by junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC). Trapp fed the puck cross-ice to O'Brien who shot the puck on goal. Roberts initially made aea pad save, but his momentum carried him backwards into the net with the puck and the goal stood. It was O'Brien's team leading 15th goal of the season.
The entire game was hard-hitting and the physicality spilled over in the third period when both teams had players ejected for fighting. Army was whistled for a total of 14 penalties while Sacred Heart was called for 13 infractions.
Army (10-15-5, 8-9-5, AHA) finished the game 0-8 on the power play, including squandering a five minute power play early in the second period. Sacred Heart went 1-9 with the man advantage. The Pioneers out shot the Black Knights 31-27 in the game.
The Pioneers are off next weekend. They return to the ice Friday February 17th when they host American International in the opening game of a home-and-home series. Game time at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
