Buffalo, NY - Cory Conacher scored two goals and Tyler Anderson made 26 saves in two periods in goal as Canisius scored three unanswered third period goals to earn a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart and a weekend split in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
The Pioneers controlled the offensive categories, out shooting Canisius 42-27 in the game. However, Anderson, who relieved Andrew Loewen after the first period, allowed only one goal over the final two periods to earn the victory.
Freshman Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) got the Pioneers on the board first, scoring his second goal in as many games with 9:02 left in the first period. Freshmen David Berube (Quebec City, QC) and Adam DeJong (Kitchener, ON) got the assists on the rookie's second career goal.
Conacher got the Griffs even late in the second period on a goal with 1:59 left in the stanza. The teams went into the lockerroom even but the Pioneers retook the lead early in the third. Just 43 seconds into the period senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) hit sophomore Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) with a pass and Boisvert found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the year.
Conacher scored a powerplay goal 4:43 into the third to tie the game again. With 4:14 left in regulation, Spencer Churchill scored what turned out to be the game winning goal. Sophomore Josh Heidinger assisted on both goals. The Pioneers pulled goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) late in regualtion for an extra attacker but Jason Weeks found the empty net to seal the victory for Canisius.
Sacred Heart was 0-for-3 on the power play while Canisius scored once in six chances with the extra skater. Drew made 24 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers will face UConn in a home-and-home series next weekend. The teams meet Friday night in Storrs and Saturday in Milford. Face-off both nights is 7:05 pm.
